He was previously Manager of Training with Citibank. He earned his MBA from the City University of New York and his Doctorate from Columbia University. He is a former President of the National Society for Performance and Instruction (New York Chapter) and is a member of the Academy of Management.

He has served on the faculty of the New York Institute of Finance, and has written monthly columns for the magazines World Executive's Digest and Chief Executive China. Most recently, Dr. Sobel has entered into a 10-year agreement with the Australian Association of Surgeons, to act as its consultant in the areas of management and business skills, as well as decision science and support.
