Dr Nicki Hedge, Dip. TEFLA, Cert. Ed., B.Phil.(Ed.), Ph.D.

Nicki is the founding Director of GUIDE, Glasgow University Initiative in Distance Education, an academic service team established in 1997 to encourage and support distance education across the University. An applied linguist, Nicki came to Glasgow from the University of Sheffield where she had been Director of an international distance Masters of Education programme in English Language Teaching. Whilst at Sheffield she edited, and wrote the introductory chapter for Going the Distance: Teaching, Learning and Researching in Distance Education", USDE Publications, University of Sheffield. From 1991 to 1994, Nicki was a Research Fellow in the Business School at the Open University where she researched approaches and attitudes to learning and co-edited (and authored 4 chapters) of the best selling Manager's Good Study Guide (Giles, K. and Hedge, N., eds.). Nicki's first university post was at the University of Liverpool where, from 1986, she taught Applied Linguistics at Masters level, introduced and ran intensive initial teacher education programmes in TEFL, and taught and researched English for Academic Purposes. During her time at Liverpool Nicki completed her PhD in reading and learning. Prior to this Nicki taught English as a Foreign Language, English Language, Art and Art History in schools in the UK and Spain.

Nicki has a particular interest in the integration of practice and theory in distance education and is involved in research on e-learning.
